If the Old Fashioned is rich and spirit-forward, the Whisky Sour is its fresher, brighter cousin.
It’s smooth, citrusy, slightly sweet and suuuper easy to drink, which is probably why it’s survived for over 150 years.
Whisky Sour Recipe
You'll need:
- 60ml whisky
- 30ml fresh lemon juice
- 20ml sugar syrup
- Ice
- Egg white or foam alternative (Aquafaba / Wonderfoam)
- Lemon peel or cherry garnish (optional)
How to make it:
- Add whisky, lemon juice, sugar syrup and egg white (or alternative) into a cocktail shaker.
-
Shake without ice first for around 10 seconds. This helps create that smooth frothy top.
-
Add ice and shake again until chilled.
-
Strain into a rocks glass over fresh ice. Optionally garnish with a lemon peel or cherry.
Which Whisky Works Best?
Tawny Cask absolutely shines in a Whisky Sour. The rich port-cask notes balance beautifully with fresh lemon and make the cocktail feel smooth, rich and slightly dessert-like. Optional twist: add a few drops of vanilla extract or maple syrup.
Light Peat keeps the freshness of the lemon, but with a subtle smoky finish underneath. Optional twist: add a tiny slice of fresh ginger while shaking.
Mallee Smoke brings out a darker, smokier style of Whisky Sour that feels made for winter nights. Optional twist: use honey syrup instead of sugar syrup.
